Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Get Some BanktasticTV Tees!
Brad created some awesome shirts for you guys on Zazzle! But the best part is that the first person to comment on this episode on the blog gets a shirt for FREE! If you don’t happen to comment first but still want a shirt, let us know and we’ll get you the information so that you can order one!

Q&A: Is the financial crisis only affecting banks and not CUs?
Brad asked a question on Banktastic to see if you all think CUs are being affected as much as banks have been by the recent mortgage crisis and recession. We think that perhaps CUs have stricter lending practices, which might be why they’re not running into as many issues as banks are right now. These are just our thoughts, and we’d love to hear what you think! Post your thoughts on the question on Banktastic, or comment on the blog!

Brad got his iPhone!
It didn’t take long, but it finally came in - Brad got his iPhone! He’s rather impressed with it so far and loving the new apps. We actually started chatting it up a little bit about an app that shows people where you are at any given time. There are already some apps out there that perform similar tasks, but not necessarily what we’re talking about. Watch the episode to check out our idea, and see if you think you’d want something like that on your phone.

Possible Facebook Payments App?
The Facebook F8 Conference was Wednesday, and there were rumors that Facebook was creating a payments app. Not knowing much more than that, Brad and I speculated that it would be an application to serve developers so that they can charge for their apps or accept donations.

However, the F8 Conference is over, and we’ve got some bad news. No payments app has been released. However, Zuckerberg unveiled Facebook Connect. To learn more about that, click on the link above and read all about it!

Credit Union Joins Credit Karma
News surfaced recently about a credit union partnered up with Credit Karma. The Pentagon Federal CU has joined many banks in posting its rates in the special offers section for Credit Karma users. We think it’s a great move for credit unions to get some exposure through Credit Karma. Good on ya, PenFed!

Q&A: What is your CU doing to collaborate?
Lisa asked this question a while back on Banktastic, but it failed to get any leverage. Mark’s posing the question now to The CU Scoop audience - what is your CU doing to collaborate? Is your CU considering working with another to generate better results? If you have a response for this discussion, head on over to the question on Banktastic and let us know what you think!

Partnership Symposium
If it hasn’t been announced just yet, Mark may have just spilled the beans. Mark & Brad are going to be at Partnership Symposium! If you’re going, be on the lookout for these two! Also, take a moment to visit the Partnership Symposium site to vote for the open guest speaker slot! Several people have posted their guest speaker audition videos, and voting is OPEN. Go! Now!

Open-Source Software for Credit Unions
The fellas at Trabian recently had to make a pretty tough decision to not open up their content management system. The discussion seemed to pose the issue of security risks for financial institutions through open sourcing code. They concluded to keep everything proprietary for now to provide a secure environment for their customers. If you want to get in on the discussion, let us know what you think about open-source software for FIs by commenting on the Banktastic Blog.

Evergreen Credit Union Scooter Loans
Evergreen Credit Union recently ran a great promotion where they pushed scooter loans during a one-day event. We re-posted anarticle talking about their promotion and how other credit unions should consider doing something similar to this. A discussion was started, and some great ideas were thrown around. We’d encourage you to check out the article on Banktastic.com and add your own thoughts on “green” events for credit unions. Great job, Evergreen CU!

Free Filene i3 June Webinars
Brent D. posted about several FREE Filene i3 Innovation Webinars that you can check out starting this Friday, June 6. These webinars will showcase 3 of Filene’s products (MatriMoney, Savings Revolution & Prize-Based Savings) and show how your credit union can benefit from these innovations. The CU Scoop - Give Back to the Future (Ep. 11)

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

The Future of Credit Unions
The CU Loop, run by Andy LaFlamme, recently made an interesting post about how credit unions will look in the year 2020. Andy made a little commentary on an article posted that forecasted the credit union future, which can be read here.

Andy makes a lot of great points from the diversity among all credit unions to tackling the issue of mergers. We’d highly suggest you check out Andy’s great post and get in on the discussion. While you’re at it, subscribe to his RSS feed - you won’t be disappointed!

Micro Community Grants
CU Communicator, run by Jeff Hardin, featured a post this week about Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and their recent presentation of nearly $10,000 to help the struggling and homeless get back on their feet.

A contribution like this is a great way for a credit union to really get involved with their community. We applaud this foundation for doing something really great to help out the local community.

The CU Scoop - Old vs. Young (Ep. 9)

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

Age Is Just a Number
An issue arose in the online credit union world when Trey Reeme was misquoted in the CU Times as saying, “60-plus-year old directors looking at the industry’s future should seriously consider stepping down to make way for a generation more connected to new technology.” (I’m not even going to link to the original article, here’s Trey’s take. You can get to the original from there.)

Of course Trey didn’t say that at all, but a great conversation about ages & trends in credit unions came of all of this. You can find the base of the conversation in the comments at Ron Shevlin’s Blog and there are other links within that thread that are worth checking out. (Also worth noting, Ron has a classy apology to Trey that is worth a read as well.)
