The Burst - Prepare for a Lockdown (Ep. 25)

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Our Sponsor Gets Slammed!
Texas State Bank, BanktasticTV’s current sponsor, has made it big in the viral video business lately. One of their cameras caught a truck pulling a camper as it ran into their covered drive-thru banking area, pulling everything down with it. You can watch the video clip in the above episode. It’s pretty crazy to think that everybody made it out just fine! Neither of us thought anybody could walk away from that! Amazing video - watch it!

Q&A: Is your FI prepared to help Boomers?
An article that I found on Payment Industry Insider spawned a question I wanted to ask the Banktastic community. Is your FI working to help Boomers prepare for retirement? They’re a huge demographic and deserve your attention! The major hype lately has been on attracting Gen Y, but your loyal customers in the Boomers group are getting ready to retire and they need your help! Over 60% of this demographic is concerned about not having enough money to retire or to cover medical costs.

The question really is this: do you have any programs established to help the Boomers along as they take this big step? They could use your guidance, and this is a great opportunity for your FI! Let us know if you have any programs or ideas!

The iPhone: Evolutionary or Revolutionary?
Some discussions are going on about whether the iPhone is going to revolutionize the banking industry. Since it’s release on July 11, the new iPhone is making a huge splash, and FIs are taking notice. Many have worked to create apps to coincide with the new iPhone release. With the phone’s technology and banks’ work to create apps to work with it, some are considering the iPhone to be a revolutionary tool for the banking industry. Others completely disagree and think it’s going to take a heck of a lot more than a phone to get a banking revolution. A lot of people are getting in on the discussion, so go check it out and add your thoughts!

Also, if you want to read Brad’s recent experience trying to get his hands on one of the new iPhones, click here. It’s a shame, but there are probably countless others going through the same situation he described in his blog post.

News: Disgruntled Employee Locks San Francisco Out of Network
I stumbled across this news story recently, and I had to share it with Banktastic. Apparently a disgruntled computer network admin, Terry Childs, got some less than stellar reviews at work, so he locked up San Francisco’s computer network by putting in his own password and refusing to give the right one to authorities. Officials have been unable to crack the access codes on their own, and are worried that he may have sabotaged the system to leak some critical data. Either way, this guy is in a huge pile of trouble - in jail on $5 million bond. Yikes.

The CU Scoop - iRemarkd (Ep. 17)

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

New iPhone Release
If you have a tv, radio, internet connection, eyes or ears, you’ve probably noticed that Apple released it’s brand-new iPhone this past Friday. Along with this release came a race for companies to create an app to go with the new phone. We’re glad to see that Mt. Lehman CU from Canada developed an app that connects you with your recent account activity right on your iPhone (and iPod touch). As Mark said, Mt. Lehman shows that a credit union of any size can be innovative and keep up with changing technology. Great job, guys!

Remarkd.com
Mark stumbled across this cool site that helps non-profits help members interact with one another. It works by members posting items up for sale on the site, and then the members give a portion of the proceeds from the sale to benefit a cause. It’d be great to see if CUs could use Remarkd for their member base, or just particular groups within your CU. We think you oughta check this out when you can!

Thanks to our sponsors!
We’d like to give a huge thank you to our sponsors, Texas State Bank! We greatly appreciate your support!

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Q&A: http://www.banktastic.com/questions/155-if-you-had-500-000-to-open-a-online-branch-how-would-you-spend-it
JB D. asked a really great question recently on Banktastic. How would you spend $500k if your CEO gave it to you in order to create a virtual branch? A lot of really great responses have come from this question, and you can add yours! Just follow this link and tell us how you’d spend your $500,000!

New Features on Banktastic!
We’ve added a whole BUNCH of new awesome features & goodies on Banktastic lately. We talk about just a few of them in this episode, but you can browse around the site and check them out for yourself!

Reply by Email
This was a big one for us - we’ve released our reply by email feature! This one was in the making for a while, and we’re glad to have it out and working well! When you submit a news article or a question and someone responds, you can simply reply to the notification email you receive. This is going to help the conversation continue on without ripping you away from checking your email. Try it out, and let us know what you think!

Badges for your Blog
If you share a lot of content on Banktastic, we’ve got a little goodie to help pimp out your blog. These badges show that you contribute to our community, and they come in three different colors, so pick whichever suits you best! Check out our About page to pick out which one you like and post it up on your blog!

Tweaked the “Hotness” Algorithm
This feature is a little more behind-the-scenes than the others, but makes a big difference in what you see on Bantkastic. We’ve created an algorithm that determines from all the content what’s hot and what’s not. You should see some differences in how well Banktastic feeds you hot content!

New Error Pages
We’ve put together a really awesome new error page! All the Banktastics have taken some shots that show how we feel when Bantkastic breaks down on us. We’re looking to add your shots, too! Just pick up that camera, open up PhotoBooth, do whatever - just show us how you feel when Banktastic doesn’t work right!

Banktastic’s First Official Private Network!
We are thrilled to announce that we officially have an association coming to the network side of Banktastic! Texas Bankers Association, the largest bankers association in the country, has signed on with us, and we greatly look forward to their arrival! It’s going to bring a lot of people to the conversations on Banktastic, so get ready, everybody. :)

Banktastic’s Sticker Fun Flickr Group
We’ve mentioned it before, but we’ll bring it up again just in case you missed it! If you’ve received some Banktastic stickers, take pictures of where you put them and post them up in our Banktastic’s Sticker Fun Flickr Group! If you want some Banktastic stickers, just email lisa@banktastic.com, send your address, and we’ll get some to you in the mail ASAP!

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

BarCampBankLondon!
BarCampBankLondon was just held on July 5. You’ve probably heard quite a bit about all the recent BarCampBank events being held lately. If you’re interested in attending one, there are several more coming up in the next few weeks:

BarCampBankChicago will happen July 16
BarCampBankCharleston will happen July 26/27

Check out the BCBs above to see about registering. Get in on the discussion while you still can!

Credit Union Joins Credit Karma
News surfaced recently about a credit union partnered up with Credit Karma. The Pentagon Federal CU has joined many banks in posting its rates in the special offers section for Credit Karma users. We think it’s a great move for credit unions to get some exposure through Credit Karma. Good on ya, PenFed!

Q&A: What is your CU doing to collaborate?
Lisa asked this question a while back on Banktastic, but it failed to get any leverage. Mark’s posing the question now to The CU Scoop audience - what is your CU doing to collaborate? Is your CU considering working with another to generate better results? If you have a response for this discussion, head on over to the question on Banktastic and let us know what you think!

We wanted to try a little something different this week an introduce you all to one of the Banktastics that you may not have seen around. Dave Kruse is a developer for Banktastic, and works from Minnesota -we’re based out of Dallas, TX.

Brad wanted to take a little bit of time to let you all get to know him a little better. They discuss some of the main points of our community and how he contributes everyday through the virtual workplace. We’re glad to have you aboard, Dave!

Partnership Symposium
If it hasn’t been announced just yet, Mark may have just spilled the beans. Mark & Brad are going to be at Partnership Symposium! If you’re going, be on the lookout for these two! Also, take a moment to visit the Partnership Symposium site to vote for the open guest speaker slot! Several people have posted their guest speaker audition videos, and voting is OPEN. Go! Now!

Open-Source Software for Credit Unions
The fellas at Trabian recently had to make a pretty tough decision to not open up their content management system. The discussion seemed to pose the issue of security risks for financial institutions through open sourcing code. They concluded to keep everything proprietary for now to provide a secure environment for their customers. If you want to get in on the discussion, let us know what you think about open-source software for FIs by commenting on the Banktastic Blog.

Feedback from the BanktasticTV Survey
We asked for your feedback recently about the shows we feature on the Banktastic Blog. We got some great answers about our content, so a huge thank you to all that filled out our survey! If you have any thoughts on any of BanktasticTV’s shows, you can still share them with us! Click here to give us your feedback!

Q&A: Why do bankers give regulators control?
Brad asked a great question on Banktastic recently that he wanted to bring up to our viewers. Why do bankers focus more on satisfying regulators than satisfying their customers? Many institutions develop with regulators in mind, which seems to be very backwards. This was a hot topic at BarCampBankDallas. One company had a team that developed new ideas without being bothered by concerns of regulation. This kind of thinking leads to better products & services for your customers. If you’ve got any thoughts on this discussion, please post your comments under this question on Banktastic.

Website of the Week: Jwaala
It’s been a while, but the website of the week is back! Jwaala, based out of Austin, TX, is an innovative company that provides creative solutions for banks, credit unions and all of their customers (…and members). This company actually won Best in Show at Finovate Startup this past April. One feature that Brad touched on was HomeDeposit, which allows bank customers to deposit checks from home, get the money now, and mail the checks in to their institution later! To check out more of their products, click here! This is definitely a company to look into if you’re wanting to give your customers better solutions.

The CU Scoop - BarCampBankDallas (Ep. 14)

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

BarCampBankDallas - Whoo!
This week marked the very first BarCampBankDallas! We had a lot of really fantastic people join us on Saturday and Sunday to cuss and discuss innovation in the financial industry. Mark wanted to share a few of the sessions with you guys just in case you missed it!

Session: iPhone
The first session of the day was discussing your FI and the iPhone. Do you spend all this time and money to develop for the new iPhone, or do you not take the risk? As Mark said, Steve Jobs predicts that 60% of all phones in use will be iPhones within the next 5 years. If you’re skeptical about that number, take into consideration the impact the iPod has had on the mp3 market. Despite the numbers, if you decide to develop for the new iPhone (coming out on July 11th), it will probably be worth your while. Can’t wait for the new iPhone!

Session: Blowing Up Accounts
A session initiated by the crew from San Francisco Fire Credit Union discussed different types of accounts and how customers would like to use them. This was a great discussion that definitely got the wheels turning. The coolest thing about San Francisco Fire CU is that their CEO, Diana Dykstra, has established an innovative group that she won’t allow to be distracted by naysayers. She allows them to develop without having their ideas squashed by talk of regulation and whatnot. This CU is doing a lot of really awesome things, and we highly suggest you check them out!

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Article: The Branch of the Future
Brad recently shared an article on Banktastic regarding a video clip showing the Branch of the Future. This is video takes a look into the potential that bank branches have in the future. Watch the video here!

If you have any thoughts on this video and want to share your opinion, please feel free to comment back to this blog!

Article: Blocking Social Networking Sites in the Workplace
Brad also posted an article he came across regarding the blocking of social networking sites in the workplace. It’s a touchy topic for some, but many people feel that if moderated properly, allowing your employees to use these social networking sites & applications can actually be of benefit to your business. Brad gave his thoughts in this week’s episode - what do you think? To block, or not to block? That is the question.

Firefox 3.0 is Spreading like Wildfire!
If you’ve somehow missed the hype about Firefox’s new browser release, the latest version was released on Tuesday. It’s getting great feedback so far, and Brad thinks you should definitely check it out. You can download this awesome new browser here. If you like it, spread the word! Firefox is aiming to make this a ground-breaking release.

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

PGP to Offer Mac Whole Disk Encryption
Mark recently found an article talking about PGP Corporation’s announcement of whole disk encryption for Mac OS X. Previously, Mac laptops weren’t able to be completely locked down, but the problem has been solved!

Many credit unions out there are primarily using Macs, and with laptops quickly replacing desktops, this new encryption from PGP is going to be a huge help. To find out more about Whole Disk Encryption, click here.

Common Wealth is bringing the Young & Free campaign (banking for 25 and under) to one lucky credit union in each state. Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Q&A: Does the company you work for use Twitter?
Banktastic’s own Community Manager asked a question recently to learn more about Twitter usage among our members’ companies. We got a lot of varying responses where people ran their company’s twitter, only used a personal one, or had none at all.

I personally think that each company should give Twitter a solid chance. Aside from the fact that it’s free to use and connects you with an enormous audience, it’s a great way to put a personal touch on your brand. You get to communicate on a very casual (and fun) level with your customers with Twitter. Handle customer satisfaction issues, troubleshooting, promote new products or services - use Twitter anyway you want for your company. Seriously, give it a shot.

We’re also still accepting sponsors for the event. For more information about sponsoring BarCampBankDallas, please email lisa@banktastic.com. We’ll see you there!

The Banktastics to cover Finovate 2008
It’s official! Mark & Lisa will be attending and covering Finovate 2008 held in NYC in October! We had a great time covering FinvoateStartup, and this time it’s going to be even better. If you’d like to meet up with us at Finovate, just contact us before hand and we’ll make sure to work something out. We’ll keep you informed about any more developments regarding covering this event.

The Burst - Section It Off (Ep. 18)

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Article: Customer Bank Fees - Mint Takes on Wells Fargo
An article shared recently by Lisa was about Aaron Patzer of Mint.com speaking out against Wells Fargo and the amount of fees they and other banks charge their customers. Aaron called for a shift in the way banks generate money, focusing less on fees and more on customer-focused programs. Patzer also threatened to “expose” these banks and all their fees on Mint.com. To this, Danny Peltz of Wells Fargo stated, “we wish you luck with that.”

If you have any opinions on this topic, we’d like to encourage you to check out the article on Banktastic and get involved! Let us know what you think about Patzer’s stance on a change in revenue generation for banks.

Q&A: Does your organization use laptop encryption?
One recent question that piqued Brad’s interest was about laptop encryption. A lot of Banktastic members gave insight into what types of encryption solutions they’ve used and what worked for them.

This was a great question that generated a lot of great responses. If you have any advice about laptop encryption, visit the question on Banktastic and share your experiences. Also, if you’ve run into an exceptionally good or bad encryption software, why not head over to the Vendors section of Banktastic and review a company? That way you can help people shopping around in the future by sharing your experiences.

Vendor Rating: FindABetterBank.com
Speaking of the Vendors section on Banktastic, Brad recently reviewed FindABetterBank.com. We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repreating - this website is providing a very unique and innovative service for banking customers, and we love it. If you’ve never checked out their site before, we encourage you to visit and try it out! Once you do, let us know what you think by adding your own rating in the vendors section in Banktastic. We think FindABetterBank is doing a rocking job at helping customers finding a FI that better suits their needs. Great job, guys!

New Blog - TheFinancialBrand.com

The Banktastics’ Roundtable Discussion about Personalization

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The Banktastics got together again for another casual roundtable discussion. This time the topic was the personalization of Banktastic. Each of us puts in a lot of personal effort to continually make this site better. From the “Welcome to Banktastic” emails to fixing bugs on the site, one of us is working hard behind the scenes to get that content to you.

Watch the video to get a more in-depth look into how we work to make Banktastic a great community for everyone.

The CU Scoop - Give Back to the Future (Ep. 11)

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

The Future of Credit Unions
The CU Loop, run by Andy LaFlamme, recently made an interesting post about how credit unions will look in the year 2020. Andy made a little commentary on an article posted that forecasted the credit union future, which can be read here.

Andy makes a lot of great points from the diversity among all credit unions to tackling the issue of mergers. We’d highly suggest you check out Andy’s great post and get in on the discussion. While you’re at it, subscribe to his RSS feed - you won’t be disappointed!

Micro Community Grants
CU Communicator, run by Jeff Hardin, featured a post this week about Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and their recent presentation of nearly $10,000 to help the struggling and homeless get back on their feet.

A contribution like this is a great way for a credit union to really get involved with their community. We applaud this foundation for doing something really great to help out the local community.

The Burst - A Double Dose of Davids (Ep. 16)

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Have you ever used the word “spondu”?
On a rather silly note, Brad brought up the fact that I use the word “spondu” on occasion. There’s a quite nice example of what the definition is in this video. He wants to know if any of you have ever heard of or used the word…ever. So comment back and let us know. I swear the word is real!

BIG Metrics Demo Account for Banktastic Members
David G. worked out a nice deal with the people from BIG Metrics to get a demo account for Banktastic members to try out. He thought the application was so great that he wanted to share the wealth with everybody else. To find out what BIG Metrics is about and get the demo account information, click here. We’d like to send a huge thank you to David for working this out for us. You rock!

Private Message about Web 2.0
Brad received a nice private message from David A. about technology leaders and their knowledge of Web 2.0. There’s a great discussion to be had on this topic. Do you think that technology leaders know anything about social media, and would it help them at all to know it? Comment back on the blog and let us know what you think.

New Features on Banktastic!
We’ve rolled out a few new features on Banktastic! The first one is a nice little algorithm we’ve setup in all main sections of Banktastic to show you what’s “hot” and what’s “fresh.” Based on community activity, you can see what’s the most popular content out there by clicking “hot”, or check out the latest news, questions or vendor ratings by clicking “fresh.” It’s a great new way to sort content on Banktastic. Check it out!

The other BIG thing we’ve rolled out this week is a groups section that’s not currently available to the public version of Banktastic. We’ve given associations, member groups, credit union leagues and many more the opportunity to use Banktastic as a communication tool to stay in touch between conferences. It’s like a mini-Banktastic all for particular group. An established group can share announcements, post articles, private message anybody within the group, and ask questions all within the privacy of your own group. You have the option of keeping all of your content private, or sharing it openly with the rest of the Banktastic community. It’s a great way to keep your members connected in between events or meetings.

Here’s a little sneak-peek at what a group looks like:

If you’d like more information about groups or are thinking of creating one in Banktastic, please contact brad@banktastic.com or lisa@banktastic.com. We’d be more than happy to setup a webinar to show you all the capabilities of a group on Banktastic.
