The Burst - Regulations Got You Down? (Ep. 13)

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

ICBA of New Mexico IT/Operations Conf.
A huge thanks to the Independent Community Bankers Association of New Mexico for holding such a great conference and having Brad as a Keynote presenter. Brad had a really great time and got to talk to a lot of interesting bankers in the process.

The main topic of this episode is the regulatory pressures banks face and how those pressures prevent banks from stepping outside the box and exploring social media. We’re all very adamant about utilizing social media, and it’s a shame that banks are afraid to try implementing any new technology due to regulations. As Brad said, you don’t necessarily have to jump off head first and create your own social community online. You can very easily connect with your customers online through something as simple as a blog.

Banks definitely need to get on board and try harder to get involved online. There are ways you can try out social media without compromising your security - others have done it just fine! It just takes a good try.

If you ever have a question about utilizing social media for your bank and need some good feedback, we’d encourage you to check out Banktastic.com to see what information is out there. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, ask the community and start a conversation. Banktastic is a great starting point for learning about social media and FIs.

Article: Wells Fargo Announces vSafe
Wells Fargo recently announced “vSafe”, which is an online safe for their retail customers. vSafe allows customers to store things like audio, video, pictures, and many other popular file types online without having to keep clutter at home or on their own computers. This is a really great service, so props to you, Wells Fargo!

Article: Frontier Airlines Files Chapter 11
Frontier Airlines recently had to file for Chapter 11 due to an unreasonable increase in withholdings in funds received from ticket sales by their credit card processor, First Data. First Data notified the airlines that they intended to begin withholding 50% of their credit card sales, which was a huge threat that inevitably ran Frontier out of business.

The Burst - How Do You Bank? (Ep. 11)

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Brad’s Thoughts on This Episode
Hey folks, sorry for the ’silence’ this week but whaddya gonna do, right?! I just again wanted to give MUCHO props to Seesmic for helping us with this episode. Those video responses were received within a minutes after my initial post and they came from all over the world. It’s a great way to see how conversations have truly gone global.

Anyway, I realize that a lot of these folks are on one end of the tech-savvy scale but I don’t necessarily think they are exceptions. People want their banking experience to be less obtrusive so by using a lot of online services they are able to do so but notice that these people still don’t feel comfortable handling ‘bigger chores’ like car loan or mortgages yet because the online experience hasn’t made them feel comfortable enough to do it. All great responses and hopefully it provides some insight into the minds of the banking consumer.

Thanks again for watching The Burst and yes, we are changing the industry!

Thanks to Everybody from Seesmic!
We’d like to send a huge thank you to everyone that participated in our Seesmic video survey. We got some fantastic feedback, all of which will help bankers learn more about the banking trends of everyday people. You all were a great help, so thank you!

The CU Scoop - Site-Seeing (Ep. 4)

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The CU Scoop” featuring Mark McSpadden. Here are some important notes about this episode:

WhatAreYouSavingFor.com
One of Mark’s favorite site launches from April 1st was WhatAreYouSavingFor.com. Started by Members Credit Union based out of North Carolina, WAYSF.com is a great online tool for those with What Are You Saving For? accounts at MCU. They’ve developed a community to help encourage people to continue saving if they run into any speed bumps reaching their goal. It’s a great motivational tool for those trying to save some money.

Banktastic.com
A little bit of self-promotion, but totally necessary. Banktastic relaunched on April 1st with a brand new look as well as a new reviews feature. We’ve made it easier to post news articles and ask questions. The site is quite a bit more user-friendly, so go check it out if you haven’t yet!

You can be on The CU Scoop!
We’re interested in your thoughts on topics and trends in the credit union industry. If you want to be a part of our show, record your own video (roughly 2-3 minutes long) and upload it to our Viddler.com account. Here’s the log-in information:
username: thecuscoop
password: markymark
Remember the rules: 1.) no bank bashing, and 2.) don’t self-promote too much. If you have any questions about sharing your video with The CU Scoop crew, send an email to mark@banktastic.com.

The Burst - It’s All Good (Ep. 10)

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

Good People Day 2008
Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV declared April 3, 2008, the first ever Good People Day. The point was to give props to the good people in your life, so Brad wanted to take a minute and say thanks to each and every person that’s ever visited Banktastic, watched an episode of our show, and helped make us who we are today. We couldn’t do it without you all, so thank you, good people!

Website of the Week: Banktastic.com!
That’s right, we chose ourselves as the Website of the Week. If you somehow missed the big release of Banktastic’s new look this past Tuesday, April 1st, run over to our community and check it out! We added a new reviews section to Banktastic that allows users to rate and comment on vendors and their products & services. Also, we had a great April Fool’s video, and if you missed it, watch it now!

Questions from Banktastic
The first question that Brad talked about was posted by Roz G., and her question was how many of you have contingency plans for a Pandemic in your BCP? Watch Brad’s response in the video above, or click the link to follow the discussion on Banktastic.

The second question that we’re discussing was asked by JB Dearing, and he asked so with the makeover, does this mean Banktastic is out of beta? The short answer to that is we’re never really out of beta. Follow the conversation on Banktastic to see what others had to say by following the question link.

The Race to 22 Contest is Over!

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Hey everybody,

Banktastic’s first contest, The Race to 22, is over! Congratulations to Mike Templeton for winning the $122 Visa gift card! Mike, spend it wisely! We had a great time watching the contest unfold, and we’re very, very thankful for each new member that was brought to the Banktastic community. We also thank each person that participated for helping to grow our community.

That’s it for the first contest. I wonder what we’ll think of next…

Have You Seen the New Banktastic?

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Today, April 1st, we released the brand-new version of Banktastic.com. The site got a complete facelift including a new feature - company & product reviews! This is a great way for companies & consumers alike to get involved and help members of our community learn more about specific companies & their products.

We’re really excited about the big changes we’ve made to Banktastic. We spent a lot of long hours working to make this site better, and, of course, ran into a few bugs in the process. By the way, a huge thanks to those watching the countdown and endured the delay of the new site with us. It was completely worth the wait!

So take a look around the site and see what we’ve made better. Feel free to give us your feedback by commenting on this blog. Oh, and if you happened to miss our April Fool’s video about the Banktastic Water Cooler, you can watch it here:

Thanks everybody!

The Burst - Straight from SXSW (Ep. 7)

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Download this video

Thanks for checking out this episode of BanktasticTV’s “The Burst.” Here are some important notes about this episode:

The Banktastics at SXSW
Brad & Lisa have been at SXSW and brought you some fantastic footage, so watch and learn! We asked people what they didn’t like about their bank and got some great answers. We’ve included in the show notes the responses of people that were not willing to participate in our video podcast. We thank everybody for participating and helping us to better our industry.

We felt it was very important to talk to people at SXSW as it’s generally a very young crowd that’s very tech savvy, a group of people many banks & credit unions are targeting these days. Learning about their thoughts on how their banks could improve is extremely important. When talking to people about what frustrated them about their bank, one of the most brought up issues was overdraft fees with poor customer service being a very close second. Many people that we spoke to said they didn’t feel as if the overdraft fee was a “convenience service” at all and felt the fee was extremely high.

As I said above, poor customer service was a big complaint among those interviewed. One woman said that she signed up with a bank because of an alluring offer, but has yet to receive it even several months after her account has been opened. She told us that once her reward has been received, she’s definitely going to close this account due to the lack of help from this particular bank’s employees & automated systems.

We spoke with an up-and-coming filmmaker who told us that she hated her bank and switched to a credit union because they’re easier to work with and much more like a friend to her than a place that just holds her money. However, another person told us that they liked having their personal accounts in a credit union, but realized that they just didn’t work well on an international business level, so he had to switch all his business accounts to banks.

Others said they felt that their bank’s online banking service was just not up to par with other banks. Some felt that their bank’s site was overly-secure and difficult to use, while others felt that they weren’t provided enough options.

Many people we spoke to said that they were generally happy with their banks and didn’t have a very strong complaint, and those who said they had run into issues said that they weren’t great enough to really consider switching to another bank. The most highly praised bank of all was Bank of America with people saying that they felt very secure with their systems and rarely ran into any issues.

If any of these comments ring true to you or if you have any rebuttal, please start a discussion on Banktastic so others can weigh in on what SXSW attendees had to say.

RealSolutions.coop
Mark talks about the group at Real Solutions attending the CUNA’s 2008 Governmental Affairs Conference. They have some great interviews, pictures & podcasts available on their site for you to check out. They’re really well laid-out dashboard will help show you all their goodies from the GAC.

Tim McAlpine & Larissa Walkiw Hit the CUES Conference
Tim McAlpine & Larissa Walkiw took the CUES conference by storm last week with some hard-hitting journalism. They conducted fantastic interviews and recorded it all for your viewing pleasure. The hilarity ensues in their report from CUES.

Banktastic is going to SXSW
Brad and Lisa are going to SXSW this weekend! We’ll be visiting to check out the Interactive portion, and will be in Austin from Saturday until Tuesday. Keep an eye out for us if you’re headed that way!

Making Deposits with your Mobile Phone
There’s a great discussion going on right now at Banktastic about the ability to make deposits to your bank account by taking a photo of a check with your cell phone. This new technology is being used by Mitek Systems. It’s amazing what we can do with technology these days.

Website of the Week: SmartyPig
Brad’s Website of the Week is SmartyPig.com. Basically, SmartyPig is an online piggybank that you can use. You basically set a monetary goal for a specific item, add money to your account as you can, and then gather all your cash once your goal has been met! The best part is that you can allow others to add money to your account (sure beats a check in the mail), plus your account gains interest! Have thoughts on SmartyPig? Banktastic News

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Just released: Banktastic News! This is one of the features we have had in mind from the get go: a place where you can share the news you read online with others in the banking community. Not only can you share this news, but you can also talk about it via the comments. So go check it out. Do it now! :)

Recommend a Question to a Friend, Tags, and Vegas

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Last week we rolled out a feature that we had several requests for: Recommend a Question to a Friend. Now when you are viewing or create a question and you think one of your friends would be interested, you can direct that question to them using this feature.

We also threw tags into the mix and are excited about the ways that these will start providing you with more relevant content. Check them out at the bottom of any question!

Finally, last week I said that Brad would give us a blog post from Vegas, instead he posted a video question to Banktastic! So head over to the site, search for ‘badges’ and you should see his question. (Or you could just use this link!)

That’s all for now!

I Recommend We Fix the Recommendation Engine!

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Sorry if you’ve had a lot of irrelevant recommendations over the last few days. (I guess that’s why we call it a Beta!) The “Wreck” decided to just start recommending everything to everyone and that’s just not a very effective way to do things!

You’ll be happy to know that things are now back to normal and I’ve (hopefully) removed all the irrelevant recommendations from the site. Now would be a great time to check in and see what the community is talking about that you could benefit from or contribute to!

Also, look for some new Banktastic goodness at the end of the week, including a post from Brad in Vegas!
